desk-based assessment and heritage statements
Heritage statements and desk-based assessments are useful ways to assess the archaeological potential of a site. This type of work is sometimes required as part of the planning process, or potential developers may choose to commission a desk-based assessment or heritage statement to be better informed.
Desk-based assessments draw together the known background on a site from a variety of sources, including historical records, archaeological information held by the county Historic Environment Record and archaeological literature. Old maps and aerial photographs may be examined and a walkover survey of the site carried out. As part of this process, the viability of further methods of archaeological investigation can be assessed . All this information is drawn together in a report.
Heritage statements are similar, but are usually shorter documents, designed to identify heritage assets and describe their significance and setting.
We are experienced in undertaking heritage statements and desk-based assessments for all types of site, from the very large to the very small, so please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
